Is Buenos Aires Safe for Tourists?
Buenos Aires is generally one of the safer major cities in Latin America, but like any big metropolis, it requires street smarts. Violent crime against tourists is rare, but petty theft (pickpocketing and phone snatching) is common.
Common Scams to Avoid
- The Mustard Trick: Someone "accidentally" squirts mustard or bird poop on you. While a "friendly" stranger helps you clean it up, their accomplice steals your bag. Always refuse help and walk into a store to clean up.
- Fake Bills: When paying with cash in taxis, drivers might switch your 10,000 peso note for a fake one and claim you gave them a counterfeit. Pay with exact change if possible.
- Motorcycle Thieves (Motochorros): Never stand near the edge of the street holding your phone. Thieves on motorcycles often ride by and snatch phones out of people's hands.
Safe vs. Unsafe Areas
Neighborhoods like Palermo, Recoleta, Belgrano, and Puerto Madero are very safe, day and night. San Telmo and Microcentro are safe during the day but require caution at night. La Boca (outside the immediate Caminito tourist area) should be avoided entirely, as well as the Retiro train station area after dark.
