The Perfect 3-Day Buenos Aires Itinerary
Only have a long weekend in the city? Do not worry, 72 hours is enough time to get a taste of the best food, culture, and architecture Buenos Aires has to offer. Here is a step-by-step guide with maps and local suggestions to maximize your time.
Day 1: The Historic Heart (Microcentro & Puerto Madero)
Start your journey by exploring the political and historical center of Argentina, then head to the modern waterfront for a beautiful sunset.
Map Route: Microcentro to Puerto Madero
- Morning (9:00 AM): Start at Plaza de Mayo. Visit the Casa Rosada (Pink House) and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Take a walking tour to understand the city's complex history.
- Lunch (1:00 PM): Walk down Avenida de Mayo towards Congress and stop at Café Tortoni, the oldest cafe in the city, for medialunas and coffee.
- Afternoon (3:00 PM): Visit the majestic Palacio Barolo. Book a guided tour to go up to the lighthouse for incredible panoramic views.
- Evening (7:00 PM): Cross into Puerto Madero. Walk across the Puente de la Mujer (Women's Bridge) and enjoy an upscale steak dinner by the water at restaurants like Cabaña Las Lilas.
💡 Local Suggestion: Watch out for pickpockets in Florida Street (Microcentro) and do not exchange money with the "arbolitos" on the street without a local guide. Use Western Union for better rates!
Day 2: Tango, Antiques, and Color (San Telmo & La Boca)
Experience the bohemian, artistic, and traditional side of the city. (Try to do this on a Sunday for the full experience).
Map Route: San Telmo to La Boca
- Morning (10:00 AM): Head to San Telmo. If it is Sunday, walk the massive street fair along Defensa Street. Browse antiques in Plaza Dorrego.
- Lunch (1:30 PM): Grab lunch at the historic Mercado de San Telmo. Try empanadas at El Hornero or a choripán at La Choripanería.
- Afternoon (3:30 PM): Take a taxi (do not walk) down to La Boca. Explore Caminito, the famous street museum with colorful conventillo houses, and see the Boca Juniors stadium (La Bombonera).
- Evening (8:30 PM): Head back to San Telmo or Centro and book a Tango show. El Querandí or La Ventana are great options for dinner and a show.
💡 Local Suggestion: La Boca is very safe in the touristy Caminito area during the day, but you should not wander outside the marked tourist zones, and definitely leave before it gets dark. Always take a Cabify/Uber to and from La Boca.
Day 3: Parks, Art, and Nightlife (Recoleta & Palermo)
Spend your final day enjoying the European elegance of Recoleta and the trendy, vibrant atmosphere of Palermo.
Map Route: Recoleta to Palermo
- Morning (10:00 AM): Explore Recoleta. Visit the incredible Recoleta Cemetery (where Eva Perón is buried), then see the giant metal flower sculpture (Floralis Genérica) and the Fine Arts Museum (MNBA).
- Lunch (1:00 PM): Take an Uber to Palermo Soho and eat at a trendy café or a local parrilla (like Don Julio or La Cabrera, if you have reservations).
- Afternoon (3:00 PM): Relax in the Bosques de Palermo (Palermo Woods). Walk through the Rosedal (Rose Garden) and the Japanese Garden. Afterwards, do some boutique shopping in Palermo Soho.
- Evening (9:00 PM onwards): Stay in Palermo. Grab dinner, then experience the famous Buenos Aires nightlife. Grab craft cocktails in a speakeasy like Florería Atlántico (in Retiro) or Victoria Brown (in Palermo).
💡 Local Suggestion: Remember that Argentines eat dinner very late! Restaurants rarely open before 8:00 PM, and locals typically dine at 9:30 PM or 10:00 PM. Bars get busy past midnight.
